Abercrombie Military - After the fort was abandoned in 1877, the fort buildings were sold and removed from the site. A Works Progress Administration (WPA) project in 1939–1940 rebuilt the three blockhouses and magazine and returned the original military guardhouse to the site.
In the summer of 2001, a project was initiated to renovate major portions of the WPA project and reinterpret the site. It was also the only post in the area to be besieged by Dakota (Sioux) warriors for more than six weeks during the Dakota Conflict of 1862.

During the Dakota conflict, Minnesota volunteers manned the fort as area settlers sought refuge there. The "regular" soldiers of the United States Army were disbanded during the Civil War and replaced by the Minnesota Volunteer Infantry.

The fort protected later fur trade era ox wagon trails, military supply wagon trains, stagecoach routes and steamboat traffic on the Red River. It was also a supply base for two large gold prospecting expeditions into Montana in the Dakotas.
